Why this engine is different This is the one AI surface where classic Google rankings still directly feed retrieval. ChatGPT will cite a page that ranks nowhere on Google; AI Overviews mostly will not. How Google AI Overviews pick their sources

AI Overviews retrieve candidate pages from Google's own search index, using a technique Google calls query fan-out: the model issues multiple related sub-queries, pulls top results for each, and synthesizes an answer with citations. Eligibility is plain: your page must be indexed and snippet-eligible in normal Google Search.

Google documents this directly. Fan-out is "a set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model to request more information and fetch additional relevant search results," and eligibility requires that "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google Search Central, AI Features and Your Website).

The fan-out detail matters for strategy. A page can get cited because it ranks for a sub-question, not the headline query: across AI search surfaces, Ahrefs found only 12% of AI-cited URLs rank in Google's top 10 for the original prompt (Ahrefs, AI Search Overlap study). Covering the narrow sub-questions inside your topic is a legitimate way in.

Since the feature launched in the US on May 14, 2024 (Google, I/O 2024 announcement), the same retrieval stack has expanded into AI Mode, Google's conversational search tab, which rolled out to 180 countries in 2025 (Search Engine Land, 2025). Optimizing for AIO and AI Mode is one job, not two.

The prerequisite nobody wants to hear: you need Google rankings first

AI Overviews are not a shortcut around SEO. Sourcing correlates with organic rankings more than on any other AI engine, so a site with no Google visibility for a topic will almost never be cited on that topic. Build baseline rankings first; extractability then decides which ranking page gets quoted.

The bar is no longer "top 3 or nothing," but it is still "rank somewhere real." Honest conclusion for planning: if a query matters to you, you need a page that can reach Google's top 20 for it or for its sub-questions. Everything below assumes that page exists.

Passage-level extractability: write blocks Google can lift

AI Overviews quote passages, not pages. The page that wins the citation is usually the one with a self-contained 40 to 60 word answer sitting directly under a heading that matches the sub-query. Structure each section so a machine can cut it out cleanly and it still makes sense alone.

What not to do: two myths that waste your quarter

Two popular AIO tactics have been tested and do not work: adding schema markup as the featured-in-AIO lever, and blocking Google-Extended to control AIO inclusion. The first has no measured causal effect; the second controls Gemini training, not AI Overviews. Spend the time on structure and rankings instead.

Myth 1: schema markup gets you into AI Overviews

Google is explicit: "Structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add" (Google, Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features). Ahrefs then tested it: 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026, matched against 4,000 controls, moved AIO citations by -4.6%, AI Mode by +2.4% and ChatGPT by +2.2%, all noise-level (Search Engine Journal, May 2026).

The correlation people cite (schema-marked pages get cited more) reflects that well-run sites do both. Keep schema for rich results and freshness signaling (dateModified lives there), but structure beats schema: the extractable answer block is what gets lifted, not the markup.

Myth 2: blocking Google-Extended keeps you out of (or safely in) AI Overviews

Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that controls whether your content trains Gemini. It has no effect on AI Overviews or AI Mode, which draw on the regular search index through Googlebot (Google Search Central). The only levers over AIO inclusion are the snippet controls (nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet) and noindex, and every one of them also cuts your regular search snippet. Should I block Google-Extended in robots.txt?

Blocking Google-Extended stops your content from training Gemini models, and that is all it does.
